Unisys Ignite Service Broker Accelerates Next Gen Network Transitions for Unisys UVMS/VSE550 Solution Customers

Unisys UVMS/VSE550 customers can now migrate to NGN architecture without rewriting legacy voice messaging applications

8 July, 2008 — AppTrigger, the leading application connectivity expert, today extended its capabilities for market-leading messaging provider Unisys and their customers by expanding its features for the Unisys Ignite Service Broker (Service Broker) offering. AppTrigger’s latest product release has coincided with the expansion of the Unisys Ignite Service Broker (Service Broker) offering to customers of the Unisys UVMS/VSE550 solution. These customers can now maintain their existing voice messaging solutions while migrating to a NGN (next generation network) architecture at a dramatically lower cost than the cost of rewriting their existing large-scale applications for the new environment.

AppTrigger’s core technology powers the Unisys Service Broker, a highly scalable, carrier grade network element that enables IMS, VoIP, and legacy intelligent network (IN) applications to be resistant from the changes in converging networks. The Unisys Ignite Service Broker provides Unisys’s 150m+ customers the ability to seamlessly migrate and modernise their existing Unisys network layer platforms.

Unisys customers now benefit from new key performance enhancements to the Service Broker including support for Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC) and Media Server Markup Language (MSML).

  • Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC) - The newly integrated BICC support enables service providers to utilize a single call session protocol for both TDM and RTP while maintaining compatibility with UMTS R4.
  • Media Server Markup Language (MSML) - MSML brings rich IP media resource control. MSML is rapidly becoming the standard of choice for applications that need to control NGN media servers due to the simple and widely accepted language foundation.

“This is telecommunications modernisation at the network layer. At present, many Unisys customers in Europe and around the world are utilising intelligent network (IN) applications over legacy technology,” said Patrick Fitzgerald, SVP of sales and marketing at AppTrigger. “Now, with the expanded capabilities of the Unisys Service Broker solution, those customers can migrate their IN applications to IMS and NGN networks at a much lower cost.”

Existing stove pipe architectures mean that telecommunications providers are tied up servicing and extending their current architecture, while the next generation approach (IMS) does not extend well into existing applications. The Unisys Service Broker Solution extends the life of current stove pipes while making an investment towards IMS. The solution uses the principles of software-oriented-architecture (SOA) to service providers’ network layer.

“Our customers value a transitional strategy based on modernising the network layer,” said Jim Tanner, president, Global Communications Group at Unisys. “Traditionally, applications are not easily extended to new networks without costly custom integration. This often results in profitable applications being retired or replicated when NGN service networks are introduced. The Unisys Service Broker extends the life and investment of these legacy applications while enabling the creation of new service bundles at a faster time-to-market.”

The Unisys Service Broker is now available to customers in regions around the world
